From Startup to Climate Leader: Zelsius Launches Groundbreaking Climate Program
Zelsius, the innovative spin-off from the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and proud member of Technopark Luzern, has reached a defining milestone with the launch of the Central Switzerland Climate Program. Backed by the Albert Koechlin Foundation, the initiative empowers small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across Central Switzerland to take their first structured steps toward net zero emissions.

The program, which begins this September, lowers the entry barrier for SMEs to conduct their first comprehensive CO₂ assessment (Scope 1–3). Zelsius’ software-driven approach allows companies to pinpoint emission hot spots quickly and to translate data into actionable climate strategies. With subsidies covering up to 83% of costs, even resource-constrained firms can participate and benefit from expert guidance in developing effective reduction measures.

This initiative could hardly come at a more critical moment: SMEs account for an estimated 20–30% of Switzerland’s total emissions, yet only one in eight companies knows its actual CO₂ footprint. By addressing this gap, Zelsius and its partners are providing not just compliance readiness amid growing EU and Swiss regulatory requirements, but also tangible competitive advantages for businesses ready to adapt.

For Technopark Luzern and the broader innovation ecosystem, Zelsius’ achievement showcases how local ventures can drive systemic change. “With this program, we are proving that climate action and business competitiveness go hand in hand” says Marcel Niederberger, Program Lead at Zelsius. The Central Switzerland Climate Program is more than a sustainability project — it is a model for how Swiss startups can scale impact while strengthening regional resilience.
